I am featured in EAKBL!

October 15, 2025 by Kerly Ilves

Today’s discovery of finding myself randomly from EAKBL – Eesti Kunsti ja Arhitektuuri Biograafiline Leksikon, in English Biographical Lexicon of Estonian Art and Architecture, brought out a huge laugh. Not sure why, but it felt so unreal to see my name there. Me in a biographical lexicon. Also referred to as an artist. Is this real?

Anyhow, I am curious about it, so I guess I have to find out more about how this happened, and I have actually done way more than this. 🙂

Viljandi Folk swept me away again!

August 1, 2025 by Kerly Ilves

After a year, I was for my great surprise invited again to take photos at the wonderful Viljandi Folk Festival. It was my absolute pleasure to be there once again. Thank you, Kristjan Priks, for your patience and kindness in making it happen again!

Taking photos and running from one show to another is not easy, but great shots and great music make it up for me. I found some new favourites such as: Kader Tarhanine, Džambo Aguševi Orchestra and Elizabeth Davidson-Blythe & Daniel Quayle. Of course, I was very happy to see Mari Kalkun after a short break, and last year’s show-makers Trad.Attack! and lovely Duo Ruut.

I was especially glad to be able to share my work with Eestielu.ca readers all around the world. So, if you didn’t get to go to Folk this year, then the gallery should give you a pretty good overview of what you missed!

Trad.Attack! gave another wonderful show. Sandra is awesome!

Can’t get enough of Mari Kalkun’s music.

New favourite Kader Tarhanine from Africa. Little did I know that I would end up on the stage with the band. 😁

Until the next year!

July exhibition for a day

July 1, 2025 by Kerly Ilves

What a day today is going to be. I can present the exhibition “Toronto Estonian House: Last Act” for one day in Kultuurikatel’s väike saal on the ground floor. ESTO 2025 is taking place there for one day!

If you are around, please stop by. They have workshops taking place in that hall, but you can squeeze in just for photos. Here is the schedule with all the information about the July 1st (Happy Canada Day!) programme of Global Estonian Diaspora Networking Day. If you stopped by, take a photo of your favourite photo and email it to me with your thoughts to kerly/at/kerlyilves.ee No fret, if you can’t come, as there will be a chance to see it in Tartu this fall.

Here is a part of the exhibition at its original presentation place, at Toronto Estonian House. Rest in peace, Eesti Maja.

It is very suitable to share this photo, which was added to a press release from Tartu City Council about a March break in Estonia, which once again was a bit different from the usual way.

“Tartu Tähestik/Tartu alphabet” photos

April 15, 2023 by Kerly Ilves

Few years ago I got an invitation to participate at a book launch. I was surprised, why I was invited, but decided to go. The book launch was organized to promote Valdur Mikita‘s, who happens to be a wonderful nature and old-traditions loving very pleasant writer and semiotician. The book was ordered by Tartu City Government, as a publication to promote Tartu’s special vibes and also gather its most important parts into an alphabet.

I didn’t have the pleasure to shoot the cover of the book, that chance is still yet to come, but I had couple of photos published in the book. The most proud I am of this very random moment, I managed to capture, while I think I was in another shoot. It portrays young people on top of the roof during the sunset. They were there to enjoy the concert, which took place just under their window, in a small and quaint courtyard. There was a pigeon behind them, which caught their attention and I captured this shot. I took several others, when they were looking down and elsewhere, but this one was chosen. I especially love this shot because of the evening sun’s warm colour, which makes the red bricks of one of Tartu’s icon’s – Jaani kirik/St. John’s church, bursting with colour.

May green

May 1, 2022 by Kerly Ilves

May is described as green. During this month you will see how trees go green, almost overnight. I have already started noticing the little mouse ears of green fresh leaves on the bushes. Trees still seem very bare. But wait, May will change all this.

Also, more light is making the days longer. The evening sun is enjoyable, the wind is warm and it makes you want to stay out and enjoy the day. Oh dear summer, is not far.

Not sure if I will continue presenting monthly photos on the front page, the way I have done so far. Present May photo marks that I have been doing this for a year. I guess this is how time flies. Most likely I will continue, but just in another form.

Until the next time.

March awakening

March 1, 2022 by Kerly Ilves

March is the month of waking up. The month of spring and new beginnings. Liberation. Such a powerful month!

Most of the things we experience every day is up to us. We are creating our reality. The month of March will just add heat under our toes – to wake up and start moving. Get going! Throw off those thick winter coats (if the weather permits), turn your nose to the sun and reach for the natural vitamins that ginger, oranges and garlic is offering. Do not forget your scarf yet. Gaze into the sun before the sunset to get all that good sun energy in you to fill you up ready for action!

Embrace every morning of March and wake up in a good mood. Your mind and body will thank you!
