August work getaway

August 1, 2023 by Kerly Ilves

I am blessed to be working at a job, which offers me always a variety of different tasks. Also surprises and challenges, so I never get bored. One interesting assignment is the house visits. There are many Estonians who fled from the World War to Canada, living all around the country. They get old or they pass, and the descendants are left with various Estonian memorabilia, which is looking for a new home.

It is wonderful to be welcomed to strangers’ homes to go through their items, which are oftentimes so beautifully arranged and displayed. It shows the owner’s appreciation of the items representing their home country and pride in being Estonian.

Pictured is a photo of Ene-Liis’ home, specifically her dining room. On its table, she had laid out all of the items she no longer wishes to keep, but which represent her travel to Canada from Estonia, gifts brought from there or items her mom used to make. In one word – history. Not just her or her family’s, but the history of Estonians who found a new home in Canada.

Museums are into preserving the people’s or countries’ heritage. So there are always items they are looking for, not only these but also the stories behind the items. VEMU got a nice collection of items and stories from Ene-Liis’ kind donation. These items will preserve the history and display the life of many people in the museum, which allow other people to get to know more about the Estonian diaspora in Canada.

July Pride!

July 1, 2023 by Kerly Ilves

Though June was an official Pride month, then usually the beginning of July marks the big Pride parade in Toronto. What a beautiful and sad month June was, as there was so much joy and so much grief due to the passing of Ülle.

I have always taken my time to visit the Pride parade. There are some years when it is not so good and then there are years when the parade leaves a really good impression, like this year. It was well organized, it was flowing and they gave away lots of nice freebies. I usually do not care about random knick-knacks, but some practical things like fanny packs, hats and bags and even some cute buttons, I appreciate a lot.

I chose this photo to represent this year’s parade, as you can see two races here and they are not white Caucasians. Makes me so happy to see different colours and different races, being proud of who they are and spreading the love.

If you want to know more about Pride and the meaning and read news etc, then please check this website www.pride.com.

Farewell to Ülle Veltmann

June 15, 2023 by Kerly Ilves

I never thought that I would ever have to write these lines about Ülle which means that the hardest working perpetuum mobile has run out of the breath of life. Whoever met her knew that she was ALWAYS busy, always engaged with something or somebody, always in MOTION! That is how the Estonians in Toronto remember her. Here is a little example. My friend Kadri visited me in Toronto ten years ago and during that time we also went to the Estonian House. On Monday, the 12th of June, I sent her an email and informed her about Ülle’s passing. She replied with the following:

Was it Ülle who managed the Estonian House cafeteria? And who had big daily plans and multitasking lists for each day? I remember your stories about her and a couple of meetings, there in the Estonian house and 1x also at Tallinn airport. She delivered a package. She really doesn’t look that old and I am sad to hear that she left so soon. Ülle was probably such a person that because she was so active, that she was able to do a lot of things in life, but I can understand from your story that this news came unexpectedly.

This is the first photo I ever took of Ülle. Our first meeting was on the 3rd of September, 2011 in Seedriorg.

Indeed, this devastating news came unexpectedly. I knew that she was sick, for a very short time, but I always knew that she can beat it. She reassured me, probably to spare me from worry since she always thought of others. But she didn’t recover – a week in the hospital and she was done! Everyone knows that she did things magically well, made hard things look easy, and with superhuman speed, so perhaps the quick way she left us is representative of how she lived life with force. She was a force to be reckoned with! I never thought that I will be so deeply affected by losing Ülle because I always thought she would always be here. We often kept in touch. I have a habit of staying up late and taking late-night walks and that was the time I used to text her. It already started in the early years when I got to know her. I would send her a few lines and she would reply and then say, I will continue sleeping. I was hoping that she will turn off her phone, but she didn’t, so I always woke her up. I couldn’t keep myself from texting her. This is how I learned that she is always there for people. We often started our message threads and conversations with “Where are you?”, big organizers as we both are, it helped us to plan how to meet each other or get something done. No time for pleasantries – the location information that set the rest.

I considered Ülle my Canadian mother. Though she really cared, she didn’t smother, but she was always there. And that meant the whole world. This is what I am going to miss the most about her – her ability to be there, find time from her always busy schedule and help out. I am waiting for her messages or phone calls, keep looking out for her red Mazda and expect the impossible – that she will just appear. I admired and respected her and always wished her the best at her nerve-wracking job. It was always a joy to see her. And I was lucky to get to see her even without making any plans. Ülle has visited my dreams I would say most of all the people I know. I used to pass her by the Estonian House or her son’s condo building many times. I always shouted “Hei Ülle! Have a great day!” Now I dream of that moment happening once again.

Ülle had the biggest heart. This can be applied in so many ways. She opened herself to you and clarified that you are very welcome to stay. The doors of her cafe in the Estonian House were always open and so was the door of her home. I often dropped in unannounced in the morning at the cafe to say hi to them, collect the hugs and continue my route to work. I enjoyed the late-night visits to her home when Ülle and other kitchen ladies were cozy on the sofa in her living room while watching TV. She said you are always welcome, you know the door is open or you know where the key is.

I took this photo of Ülle during the first months after I got to know her. She sent it to her love, who was far away. He of course raved about the photo and called it exceptional. I must admit that this photo brings out the best of Ülle, as she was an exceptional person. A person anybody would be blessed to know, as she enriched everyone’s lives! Familiar or stranger, she always treated everybody with kindness and smiles.

I will never forget her kindness, attention, excellent memory, amazing sense of humour and organization solutions (in Estonian we call Ülle orgunnikuninganna) she was able to provide. Most of the time she was the one helping me out. Interestingly enough, the day Ülle passed, I received a payment for the bed frame Ülle helped me to transport 3 years ago, after purchasing. After handing it over to the new owners, I found out that she had passed. What was this about? I never meant it to be like this, Ülle. I am sorry.

Nothing makes me happier now than to know that Ülle knew how to live. No matter her packed schedule, responsibilities, five children and many grandchildren, she knew how to enjoy herself (as she called it in Estonian, mõnuleda). She loved dresses and dressing up overall. Ülle was known to change gowns during events. She had expensive taste in anything she loved – food, clothing, furniture etc. Ülle always found time to enjoy fancy restaurants, shop at the best stores, see Serena William play her last match, wear the most expensive dresses and travel – yes, you guessed right – first class!

I will always cherish the following message Ülle sent me this January after I forwarded her my New Year’s wishes: “Happy New Year to you as well. I am thinking of you every day. You beat me to it! Everything is the same. I am sleeping at the moment. Let’s speak some other time! Hugs!”.

I am glad I got to know so many wonderful people thanks to Ülle, in the kitchen or outside it. That is what she did – she brought people together. She wrapped herself around all hearts she came across and left us with all the beautiful memories of her to cherish for the rest of our lives.

Ülle, you deserve the rest, though you left us too soon!

Below is a gallery of pictures taken of Ülle from 2011 until 2022 in random order. It gives an overview of her work, colleagues, warm smile, great sense of humour, love for dresses and her natural way of posing for the camera. What can I say, camera loved Ülle! Love you always.

June nature

June 1, 2023 by Kerly Ilves

Finally, it is summer! Or at least the month, when summer really starts. I guess it is still summer when you know you are not taking a break from work, as there is so much to do! Hahaha, I know a body needs a break. What would be the best time to have it than not in summer? So excited about what this beautiful month has to offer.

I feel like I repeat myself, but summer is the time to notice things. Explore and experience. Share and love. But yet again, any day of our lives should be lived like this – to the fullest, being the most present and appreciated. I guess it is not the best time to write anything while listening to Justament’s Petseri Tsura ja Hiitola Ätt. Words choke in my head, throat and fingers. But this only works when you are an Estonian!

/…/

Pictured here is a June shot from my earlier insects session in Hiiumaa at Kadri’s grandparents’ place. I got quite a few great shots of the June bugs aka Figeater Beetles. But what makes this shot great is the even smaller insect sitting on the beetle’s left side. When you think something is small, even something smaller exists. Miracles of the Mother Nature!

Let there be sun, laughs, good food and great company. Take it easy in June!

Published photo on Invest in Estonia website

May 15, 2023 by Kerly Ilves

Old news, but I had one of my photos published on a website. My photo of the AHHAA Science Centre was chosen to illustrate the following page of Invest in Estonia. I remember that session very well, as my brother came with me on our dad’s old bicycle, which he had tuned up. Also, you can see him at the bottom of this photo shown below. 🙂 Good times!

May clean-up

May 1, 2023 by Kerly Ilves

I know this is a bit confusing, as Earth Day is in the end of April, on 22nd of April to be exact. But for many Estonians the month of May, especially the beginning of it is the time to roll up your sleeves and do something for the community. It is time for the The Let’s Do It collective action day. I have participated in this action for few times. Basically all the time when I am at home in Estonia.

It started as a small event, which has grown into a huge event and very loved by Estonians. A few years ago it was even organized as a worldwide event. A new tradition is born. It is called World Clean-up Day. On 16th of September it is your chance to participate in it and make the world a cleaner place.

About the photo. This was taken actually in 2010 – 13 years ago! I put this group together and people bought their own friends. So what are you seeing here are the friends of me, Anette and Maria. I invited them and they invited their friends. We were cleaning cemetery and found lots of evergreen flowers. This group picture was born after Maira thanked all participants in this clean-up day and handed to everybody a bunch of flowers. How can we not take a photo after hard work and such nice gesture.

Have you ever participated in Let’s Do It or the World Clean-Up Day? If not, I strongly suggest to. As it so much fun and you will be doing so much good for the planet Earth!

“Tartu Tähestik/Tartu alphabet” photos

April 15, 2023 by Kerly Ilves

Few years ago I got an invitation to participate at a book launch. I was surprised, why I was invited, but decided to go. The book launch was organized to promote Valdur Mikita‘s, who happens to be a wonderful nature and old-traditions loving very pleasant writer and semiotician. The book was ordered by Tartu City Government, as a publication to promote Tartu’s special vibes and also gather its most important parts into an alphabet.

I didn’t have the pleasure to shoot the cover of the book, that chance is still yet to come, but I had couple of photos published in the book. The most proud I am of this very random moment, I managed to capture, while I think I was in another shoot. It portrays young people on top of the roof during the sunset. They were there to enjoy the concert, which took place just under their window, in a small and quaint courtyard. There was a pigeon behind them, which caught their attention and I captured this shot. I took several others, when they were looking down and elsewhere, but this one was chosen. I especially love this shot because of the evening sun’s warm colour, which makes the red bricks of one of Tartu’s icon’s – Jaani kirik/St. John’s church, bursting with colour.

One year from Canada Freedom Convoy

March 15, 2023 by Kerly Ilves

The other day I was going through my photos and I came across the ones from Ottawa, taken in February 2022. I actually should have posted this earlier, but February was such a busy month anyway, so I hope this still fits here just fine.

I was able to visit with a bunch of friends the historic Canada Freedom Convoy in the streets of Ottawa. I still consider it one of the most fun events I have ever been to, though no, I haven’t forgotten the crisp, but sunny day that it was. I am not a fan of -17 C, especially knowing that I have to spend the whole day outside. Oh well, I survived and was able to get even my photos published. So I lived to tell.

My photo on the right bottom corner, shows the evening festivities on the 5th of February, 2022 at Parliament Hill, Ottawa

I am still surprised that people had such bad impressions of the whole convoy. I hear you, the constant honking, and disturbance of usual peace and movement most likely was pretty annoying. But those people were taking an extra step to fight back and make themselves heard. I mean, this was a pretty bold move, especially during those freezing days!! Even if not the biggest changes were achieved and mandates were broken, it was still a very bold community action, which bought together so many strangers, who made this, at least during the weekends, a beautiful place to be.

What are your thoughts or comments on CFC? Perhaps you were one of the many to visit it?
